Albania and the EU cultivate increasingly intensive relations since 1992, when a Trade and Co-operation Agreement was signed and the country became eligible for funding under the EU Phare programme. Moreover, Albania participates in the Stabilisation and Association Process since 2002. The Stabilisation and Association Agreement entered into force in April 2009 and constitutes the cardinal contractual relation between the EU and Albania, implying commitment to align national legislation to the EU acquis in a vast number of policy areas.
